Two major industry reports came out this year, Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report and IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report (conducted by the Ponemon Institute). A few numbers from both are worth your attention.

• The cost keeps climbing. The global average cost of a data breach hit an all-time high of $4.99 million this year, up 12% from last year, according to IBM. In the US specifically, that average is now $11.5 million.
• Vulnerabilities are now the top way in. Verizon found that exploiting known vulnerabilities is now the most common initial access vector for breaches, at 31% of cases, a 55% jump from last year. Only 26% of critical vulnerabilities were fully patched last year, and the median time to fully resolve one stretched to 43 days.
• Small businesses aren't spared. In the worst cases, Verizon's research found a breach can cost an SMB more than 7% of annual revenue. Third-party and vendor-related breaches are also up 60% year over year, now involved in 48% of all breaches, a good reminder to keep an eye on who has access to your systems.
• AI and automation are paying off for businesses that use them. IBM found that organizations using AI and automation extensively in their security operations had an average breach cost of $4 million, compared to $5.93 million for those with little or no use, a $1.93 million difference.
